Signatune - my obsession

FACE OFF TODO MUNDO

I’ve been such a skeptic of this filter house / blog house / mp3 house / french house revival. I like dancing to it - and there are some great DJs in Boston playing this music - but it always reminded me of moshing to In My Eyes back in the 90’s. Fun, comfy, occasionally thrilling but ultimately a little regressive and revivalist.

Egged face, of course. My dog Dania plugged me into the motherboard a few weeks ago by linking me up to this dj Mehdi video and I’ve watched it at least once a day since. Skepticism is wack. Say yes.

I would not love the track as much if not for the brilliant video. Pairing house music and dB drag is inspired. Both pursuits rely on the man-machine relationship and the embodiment of musical sensation. Block-shaking decibels and the relentless kick drum. Both elements inspire physical response in their audience.

The video also brings a tough masculinity to house music that it does not have in (mainstream) US culture. In one of the most moving scenes, the protagonist shares a quiet moment with his mom, foreheads touching, before going to wreck all at the top of a rainy car garage.

Kourtrajmé, the video production team, is working on a documentary about life in a Parisian suburb titled, “365 jours à clichy montfermil”.

Music videos matter.
