Tiny teaching annoyances, part 0

The version of Windows XP installed in my computer lab hides file extensions by default. This is endlessly confusing and frustrating for my students. Is this “feature” is helpful to anyone?

Recently the 9th graders have been saving their Photoshop projects for use on the web. They’ve been contrasting the quality and filesizes of GIFs, JPEGs, PNGs, and PSDs. As a result of the hidden file extensions, the contents of their folders appears like this:

spongebobballer
spongebobballer
spongebobballer
spongebobballer

The only indication that the files are at all different is the icon next to each file’s name and in many cases, this icon is inaccurate or misleading.

Annoying!
